Biography

Benjamin Wymeersch

Trained as a teacher with speciality “Electricity” I taught mainly adult classes over more then twenty years. For 5 years I was the director of an adult education centre that was specialised in less common courses: maritime training, monument conservation and urban planning.

As these specific courses needed special attention, I was involved in course planning, recognition processes with different national authorities. The changed context of my activities needed a choice for my future career. As the maritime training required that all training institutions would establish a Quality Management System, this became my main role for coming years.

In time I left the regular educational organisation to become involved in both maritime and inland shipping activities. In the maritime shipping industry, I became a Quality Manager for a Belgian Shipping Company and a related Maritime Training Centre with branches in Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and the Republic of Congo.

The need to visit shipping agents (audits) and our training centres (audits and advising training) worldwide and especially in Africa, brought new opportunities to be involved in other projects: the coordination of a single windows system in Congo, a cargo tracking system developed for Benin and Cameroun and other related projects or required audits.

In the meantime, I got involved in a non-profit organisation for inland shipping families. The specific situation of this sector was an introduction for later involvement in the development of projects in the inland shipping industry: preparing the development of manning application, auditing and advising authorities in related inland shipping administration.

Since 2015 I am working as an independent consultant, partly continuing to work with previous partners both in Benelux and in Africa.

The need to keep both the professional and non-profit activities in balance has led me to reserve time for volunteering work (teaching and advising, mainly in Thailand, Cambodia), involvement to support small-scale music-art-spiritual projects.

And so, there is always… “on the Other Hand”.
